What to do to keep them firing in the left prefrontal cortex? Well, first of all notice, this is why self awareness is the fundamental skill in emotional intelligence. If you look at, again, when you get the slides at that generic model, what you see is its self awareness undergirds self regulation.

If you don't notice that you're not in the left prefrontal cortex, in other words, if your amygdala hijacked, even low grade, and get carried away by it, you haven't a chance of getting back to the left prefrontal cortex. Intel, you can either let it run its course, or realize what's going on and disengage. So the steps to say getting from the right, to the left, start with wondering what's going on in your own mind and brain.

And noticing Wow, I'm really overreacting, I'm really upset now or starting to get upset much better if you can notice it. You know, those feelings of butterflies in your stomach or whatever signals that you're about to have an episode, because it's easier to short circuit, the earlier it is in hijack or the coming hijack. And the second is to practice things regularly. That give you a chance to be in what prefrontal cortex, not at work, particularly not when the pressure is on, but when it's off, and you have free time.
