My name is Descartes Lee, and I'm pleased to chair this UCSF mini Medical School series science of the mind. And I'm very pleased to be introducing this evening's speaker. Why are you all here today? That's a rhetorical question because Dr. Johnson is going to tell us about motivation and why we do what we do. So we're going to find out actually you're going to find out why we're here. And Dr. Johnson is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and a visiting professor at the University of Lancaster.

She has conducted research on psychosocial facets of bipolar disorder over the past 20 years, and she directs the Cal mania program at UC Berkeley. She has edited and or co authored six textbooks, including emotion and psychopathology in 2007, and the psychological treatment of bipolar disorder.
